Meet the Team

 Introducing...

Kirsty - Leader

I'm Kirsty Smith, team leader for the Cambodia 2013 GOLD project.  Last summer I was member of the 2012 Armenia team and I was absolutely over the moon to get involved in GOLD again and work on a new project.

A maths teacher by day, I'm a Guide leader in North London by night and now that I've discovered the joys of international projects, I've taken on the role of County International Advisor.  I find it difficult to function without tea and I have a previously unsuspected talent for turning weeds and groundsheets into jungle costumes.  Just in case it's not clear from the picture, I'm the one in the jungle costume.

I can't wait to head to Cambodia with my wonderful team and work with Girls and leaders in another culture.

Libby - Secretary

I'm Libby Walker, the team secretary for the Cambodia 2013 GOLD project. Two years ago, I participated in a project to Montserrat on behalf of Girlguiding and I was absolutely thrilled to get involved with GOLD this year.

I am a primary teacher in Wakefield and a Brownie leader in my spare time.  I can’t function without a coffee and I thoroughly enjoy dancing!  I have been hard at work fundraising ... I am so committed that I held a school sleepover... on a Friday evening!

I can't wait to head to Cambodia in the summer with the fabulous girls and work with youth and leaders in another culture.

Jenny - Treasurer

My name is Jenny Blackley and I am the Unit Leader at 4th Redhill Guides. I have been involved with Guiding since I was a Brownie, sacrificing vital ‘studying’ time to help at a local Rainbow unit whilst I attended university in Edinburgh.

Having grown up in a Guiding family, it was a given that I’d get involved.  When I think about the amazing opportunities I’ve had through Girlguiding, and the satisfaction of being able to share those experiences with others, I can’t contemplate never having been a part of it.

I am so pleased to have been selected to be a member of the GOLD Cambodia 2013 team and I can’t wait to spend more time with my fantastic new friends and make even more on this amazing project this summer.

Sarah - First Aider

I'm Sarah Churchill; I'm 24 years old, and from St. Albans, in Hertfordshire, outside London.
I am an Assistant Leader at the 13th St. Albans Guides.  I have been helping with this unit for about five years; before I helped at a Brownie unit for two years.  I am currently working towards my Queen's Guide Award.  I’ve been involved with lots of other Guiding activities in the past including the St. Albans Gang Show, many camping trips and several international trips.

Outside of Guides, I work full time as a Midwife on a busy Delivery Suite. I have been qualified for about 2 1/2 years.

I love travelling, and am really looking forward to Cambodia 2013. My main role on the trip is to be first aider. Bring on summer 2013!!

Rebecca - Resources

My name is Rebecca Taylor; I’m 19 years old and from a small town in Cumbria called Barrow-In-Furness. I am currently studying Primary Education at Leeds Trinity University.

I have been involved in guiding since I was 5 when I first joined as a Rainbow and I am now a member of the Senior Section and an Assistant Brownie Leader.  Alongside this, I occasionally help at Guide camps which I really enjoy (I love campfire songs a little bit too much!).

To fundraise for Cambodia I have carried out various events such as craft stalls at Christmas and Easter fayres, bag packs at supermarkets, coffee evenings, alongside a Cambodian themed Brownie sleepover. I also recently completed a two mile sponsored swim!

I am loving my GOLD journey so far and cannot wait to continue it with the rest of team Cambodia 2013!

Heather - Documentation

I’m Heather Penman; I’m 21 years old and from Edinburgh, Scotland.  I’m studying International Relations at the University of St Andrews and when at home in Edinburgh I’m an Assistant Leader with the Colinton Ranger unit, led by my mum.  Previously we were both at a local Brownie unit, where I originally started my guiding life!

My time in guiding has presented me with many wonderful opportunities to try new things and make new friends, and I was lucky enough in 2009 to travel abroad to Belgium to take part in an international jamboree.  Having glimpsed what international opportunities are available through Girlguiding, I am thrilled to have been selected as part of this year’s team to Cambodia.

I can’t wait for what will no doubt be an incredible adventure, with fantastic team mates and the chance to get involved with guiding overseas.
